Ending the Year with a Soft but Strong Finish!

Merry Christmas from all of us here at FilmGear®! Last week, our F-Series and Daylight Boxers had their time to shine but FilmGear®’s End of Year sale is finishing strong with our bi-color Soft Panels, SL Panels, and Light Pads on sale for 35% off, and our Dual Color LED Flo-Boxes and Mini Panels are 30% off. With such a variety of lights there’s something for every production!

Comet LED Soft Panel

FilmGear®’s Comet series of soft panels is the premium choice for bringing a softer glow to your image, thanks to the light’s thicker, professional grade diffusion. Both the 100W and 200W models come in 2700K-6000K, in 1x2 and 1x4 form factors, which help to more evenly light tall or long subjects. The wider feet allow you to set up even without stands, which also works wonders keeping them from falling like a stack of dominoes in your truck!

LED SL Panel

However if you are looking for something with a thinner form factor for use in more narrow spaces, the ultraslim SL Panel is the perfect solution for you. The reduced thickness also brings down the total weight to just 10 lbs for the 100W model, which pairs nicely with the V-mount battery plates to elevate the panel’s portability. The 200W SL Panel’s 2x2 form factor adds more evenly spread coverage in all directions, which studios love using to backlight subjects.

LED Light Pad

Meanwhile, if lightweight mobility is your priority, our 100W Light Pad only weighs 4.4 lbs, making it essential for set up and go shoots like documentaries where heavier light panels would be more of a hindrance than a help. And our Light Pad comes in a kit that includes a softbox, eggcrate, ballast, and mounting bracket, all wrapped up in a lightweight carrying bag so you are fully equipped for any situation. Though this light is optimised for portability, you don’t have to worry about sacrificing color accuracy, since both the CRI and TLCI exceed 95 over the 2700-6000K range.

Dual Color LED Flo-Box

But when it comes to soft light, panels need not be your only LED option. A few weeks back we highlighted the daylight and tungsten LED Flo-Boxes, but this week we’re asking the question, “Why not both?” with our dual color line. These lights keep the same freeform maneuverability that you can expect from a FilmGear® Flo-Box, but now you can flip between warm tungsten and cool daylight with just the press of a switch. Less swapping tubes means fewer accidents, which means you’ll be saving even after the 30% End of Year discount!

Mini Panel

At FilmGear®, we’re known for our big lights, and you’ve certainly seen quite a few of those over the past few weeks, and even in the 1x4 and 2x2 panels above. But we know that size isn’t everything, and the Mini Panel is proof of that. Small but mighty, the Mini Panel packs 8W of high-power SMD LEDs into a form smaller than an iPhone. The internal battery lasts up to 17 hours, so you can comfortably go cordless, which makes it a lifesaver for sneaking into tight nooks and crannies. Alternatively, you could use the ¼” threaded adapter, included in both the standard and deluxe kits, to mount it directly onto your camera as a key light.

Though there are many bi-color options when it comes to soft light, each of these lights has a unique place in your lighting lineup. Be sure to choose the ones that meet your 2022 needs with our End of Year Sale to ring in the new year with FilmGear®!

Huge Daylight Savings from FilmGear®!

We’ve spent the past few weeks diving into our various Fresnel lines, but as the days get shorter, we’ll be needing more daylight than ever, so this week, it's time to show some love to our powerhouse F-Series of faceted PARs as well as our nifty Daylight Boxers. Both HMI lines put the emphasis on output without ditching the smooth quality of their Fresnel cousins. Get your daylight savings this winter with 30% OFF of our legendary F-Series and 40% OFF of the Daylight Boxers!

F-Series

The F-Series brings the raw output of traditional PARs with the smooth, filmic look of Fresnel lenses, giving gaffers the best of both worlds. From the condensed power of the F800 to the unbridled brilliance of the F18k, the F-Series outshines competitors’ output in side-by-side comparisons. This massive output is thanks to the F-Series’ faceted reflectors which are tailored to the exact position of the HMI arc for each bulb class. To that end, the F-Series split off the F12k and F6k to use reflectors that were optimized specifically for 12kW and 6kW HMI bulbs, to further smooth out the distribution, unlike other faceted PAR lights who suffer from dark halos and other fringing effects. The widened flood angles further allow you to take better advantage of the even light quality, turning the F1.8k and F800 into impressive fill lights for indoor shoots using only house power. For outdoor shoots where you need to compete with the sun, the F-Series’ powerful yet clean output makes them absolute must-haves.

It’s not just output that our F-Series has in spades, but also its durability. You don’t have to worry about taking these lights to rougher territory or having to be too delicate when transporting them. Gaffers have gone over 15 years with these lampheads through constant use. They can weather tropical storms — just ask Mazi Mitchell, who used our F9k, F4k, and F1.8k through months of filming in the coastal Georgian summer humidity — and survive the cold of a winter shoot on the slopes. And of course the F-Series runs off of the same electronic ballasts as our other HMI lights and is compatible with the same VEAM connector pin configuration, meaning you can save both money and truck space with universal ballasts.

Daylight Boxer

But our F-Series isn’t the only source of daylight we’re discounting this week: our Daylight Boxer is perfect for times when you need that same punchy daylight power as our F-Series but in a much smaller, more maneuverable package. Gaffers love using the Boxers as bounce lights to help fill shots when you need to place the light in a spot where a bigger head would struggle. The standard and deluxe kits add the full gamut of accessories to expand on the versatility and bring the Boxers wherever you need. Throw on a softbox, lantern, or frosted lens for diffusion, or try a barrel to focus the beam, giving you the flexibility to turn the Daylight Boxer into the ideal travel-friendly daylight source.

Standard Kit:

  • 800W Daylight Boxer lamphead

  • Rigid carrying case

  • Set of 5 PAR lenses with carrying bag

  • Electronic ballast (choice of either AC or AC/DC with DC power cable)

  • 4-leaf barndoor

Deluxe Kit:

  • 800W Daylight Boxer lamphead

  • Rigid carrying case

  • Set of 5 PAR lenses with carrying bag

  • Electronic ballast (choice of either AC or AC/DC with DC power cable)

  • 4-leaf barndoor

  • HMI 800W SE lamp bulb with case

  • 7m lamphead-to-ballast cable

At 40% off, the Daylight Boxer is a portable powerhouse at a peerless price. So if you are in need of daylight output and really want to increase the variety of your arsenal, our F-Series and Daylight Boxers make a fantastic combo. Don’t let the year come to a close without harnessing the daylight power of FilmGear®’s HMI lampheads!

LEDs Joining the Fresnel Fray! Apollo Series up to 50% OFF!

The Fresnel train keeps on rolling and this time it’s the LED Fresnels turn to take the spotlight! If you want that same even yet hard beam that you can count on from our other Fresnel lampheads plus the simple efficiency of LED, FilmGear® has got you covered with our daylight and tungsten 150/250W LED spots at 50% off, and our bi-color spots as well as the new A500 at 30% off!

It’s no secret that LEDs’ output efficiency outshines traditional film lighting sources like tungsten and HMI bulbs. FilmGear® stays ahead of the game by combining our expertise in traditional Fresnel optics with our award-winning LED technology to bring you the highest per-watt illuminance out of the Apollo series. Drawing only 500W of power, our A500D outputs the equivalent of a 1.2kW Daylight Fresnel, and our A500T outputs the equivalent of a 2kW Tungsten Fresnel, and it won’t even hog your entire 20-amp circuit. If you don’t need the full intensity, you can dim the Apollos down to 0% without any unwanted color temperature change. Electronically dimming HMI and tungsten lights can be a hassle juggling scrims and color correction gels, ballasts and dimmers — the Apollo series replaces all of that with just a simple turn of a dimmer knob, with optional preset dimming curves so you can really fine tune the illuminance. If accurate color is as important to you as it is to us, you’ll be happy to know that the Apollo series maintains their 95+ CRI and TLCI throughout the entire dimming range!

Not only are these lights electrically efficient, but they’re also efficient in the way of saving time on set, as our LED Fresnels can be DC-powered, making them a battery-friendly choice even for competing with the sun in outdoor shoots or productions where you’re in more uneven terrain where a generator would be impractical. It also helps to not have to worry about carrying around delicate bulbs like you would with an HMI or Tungsten head. Up to 5 DMX channels gives you full control over fine-tuning the dimming and color temperature, ensuring that you can operate them from a distance. If you want to work with them more closely, they always stay cool to the touch, so you can work with the intuitive onboard menu without even needing gloves.

With their 30,000+ hours of LED life, these lights will make sure to be worth the investment. The future looks bright for LEDs, and our Apollo series will continue to push the limits of the form, so take advantage of the amazing sales on our LED Fresnels today before this bargain is gone!

This week, it’s Tungsten’s Turn! Fresnels & Cinelites at a discount!

Tungsten Fresnel

We’re not quite done with Fresnels yet, but this time around we’re highlighting our reliable Tungsten Fresnels. These set lighting staples are perfect for establishing that warm autumnal mood by bathing your picture with hard yet even light at just a flick of a switch — without the need of extra diffusion.

What exactly do gaffers love about our Tungsten Fresnels? Well, in addition to the advantages of Fresnel diffraction outputting a clean and shapeable beam, tungsten heads won't be tethered to electronic ballasts the same way that HMI heads would. And while HMI lamps need time to warm up and cool down before and after use, tungsten lamps can be switched on or off without delay, adding to their speedy deployment. Moreover, the lack of whirring fans or noisy arcs means that Tungsten Fresnels also run much quieter than their daylight counterparts, ideal for whenever you need clean on-set sound, especially heavy dialogue scenes.

But convenience is not all that Tungsten Fresnels have to offer: there’s also the clean, directional output with warmer tones that make great mood lighting for a more atmospheric scene. You can also soften the smooth beam with a bit of diffusion to key your subjects’ faces evenly. Its adaptable output makes it a versatile tool in the hands of a creative gaffer, cementing it as an all-purpose must-have for any lighting kit.

Any light that sees this much use needs the durability to withstand the rigors of set life, which FilmGear®’s Tungsten Fresnels are no stranger to. With fewer moving parts, these dependable lights have outlived and outlasted plenty of newer developments in film lighting in the past two decades.

Tungsten Cinelite

Looking for a tungsten light that’s just as easy to use yet more compact? Weighing in as light as 3.3 lbs, FilmGear®’s open-face tungsten Cinelites are still some of the most maneuverable film lights to this day. Just mount it onto any baby stud to get a warm bounce light with a small electrical footprint and an even smaller physical footprint, perfect for traveling productions like documentaries. Bounce your tungsten Cinelite for a warm background in an interview, or fill in a wider shot to set the mood of your scene. Get creative with our tungsten Cinelite for a remarkable 80% OFF!

So whether you’re looking for the even, focused, and sturdy reliability of our Tungsten Fresnels or the more portable, yet widespread wash of the Cinelite, FilmGear® has got you covered this holiday season with Tungsten Fresnels 5kW and below at half off and our Cinelites at a whopping 80% off!

Miniature Suns Now For 30% OFF!

Despite FilmGear®’s many exciting innovations in film lighting technologies, filmmakers around the world still trust the dependable workhorses that are the essential building blocks of any lighting package: FilmGear®’s Daylight Fresnels. Even after two decades of near constant use, these reliable lampheads give gaffers the hard light and crisp shadows that they need with the even distribution and familiar convenience that they want. Whether you’re looking to add another set to your ten-ton arsenal or just starting to craft your first two-ton truck, FilmGear®’s End of Year sale has got you covered with 30% OFF on all of our Daylight Fresnels!

When it comes to daylight, HMIs dominate both tungsten and LEDs in terms of powerful yet efficient illuminance. FilmGear®’s Daylight Fresnel lampheads diffract the raw, unrefined output from HMI bulbs to produce a smooth, unblemished wash of light over your subjects. The Fresnel lens hides all of the bulb’s imperfections without hiding its brilliance, which neither LEDs nor tungsten heads will be able to match. While LED spots (like FilmGear®’s Apollo series!) can be amazing for efficient interior shots, none can compare to these miniature suns when you need to light up a whole city block from a Condor.

Unlike other HMI lampheads, the Daylight Fresnel series’ clean light quality can be directly shone onto subjects without any need for PAR lenses, external diffusion, bounces, or any other softener. If you do decide to use your gaffers’ kit, you’ll find that the Daylight Fresnels’ beams are refreshingly easy to cut, shape, and blend with other lights.

Yet another advantage of the Fresnel diffraction lies in its insensitivity to the bulb’s geometry: unlike for faceted PAR lights, where the reflector needs to be optimised for each globe’s shape to get the cleanest output, Daylight Fresnels can comfortably support dual lamps without sacrificing the beam’s smoothness. Despite this difference, all of FilmGear®’s HMIs share the same VEAM connector pin configurations, which means you can get the same variety in lighting setups while keeping fewer lampheads and fewer ballasts on your truck.

If you do need additional ballasts, you can complete the set with a FilmGear® electronic ballast and a head-to-ballast cable at the same 30% discount as the lamphead, which already comes with barndoors! Don’t miss out on getting your hands on FilmGear®’s Daylight Fresnels, the everyday workhorses that bring you a powerful wash of smooth daylight with minimal fuss.

Power LED & Daylight or Tungsten Flo-Box Sale!

The sales just keep on coming as we at FilmGear® are bringing both our Power LED and Daylight and Tungsten LED Flo-Boxes to the forefront, joining the Power Beams from last week. With Black Friday rolling around this week, these lights are going on sale for a whopping 70% OFF! What’s more, while supplies last, we’ll throw in the whole gamut of accessories for each light during this limited time offer. Whether you need a hard, punchy output or a more subtle softness, FilmGear®’s LEDs have got you covered!

Power LED: Starting from $177

Carrying on the theme of last week’s Power Beams, the Power LED line just adds further proof that we here at FilmGear® spare no expense in the way of power. Don’t be fooled by their thin form factor, the individually lensed diodes focus up to 360W of efficient LED output all into a punchy blast of light. Check out how director of photography David Berry used two daylight 360W Power LEDs to highlight the talent’s face for this wide shot under the dappled tree shade—all while running on just two portable batteries. In fact, they were about 4 stops brighter than any other battery-operable light, making them total lifesavers for competing with the sun during this outdoor golf shoot!

Local 728 gaffer Mazi Mitchell is a big fan of the Power LEDs’ efficiency as well, and adds that he loves using the Daylight and Bi-Color Power LED 360s in situations where he’s running a set without a big generator. Even for indoor shoots, Mazi will bust these lights out when he wants daylight quality with a smaller footprint than a 1.8kW HMI, or just in cases where the heat from an HMI head would be uncomfortable.

Either as an interior ambient light bounce or as an exterior moonlight bounce, Mazi’s Power LEDs have served him both indoors and outdoors, around the clock, for years, earning their spot on his 10-ton truck. He’s certainly grown to appreciate the ability to bring them out to brighten up a shot and then toss them right back into their travel cases without worrying about breaking anything. That reassuring toughness is frankly not too common among newer LEDs that haven’t proven their longevity in the field.

If you want to try these DMX-compatible lights for yourself, now’s your chance with this sweet 70% off deal on all Power LEDs and accessories. Speaking of accessories, for a limited time, get a free set of barndoors, soft box, eggcrate, and filter frames with a valid purchase of any Power LED, while supplies last!

Daylight or Tungsten LED Flo-Box: Starting from $190

Don’t need the brute punchy output of the Power LEDs? If you prefer a more diffuse light to soften your shots, look no further than FilmGear®’s lightweight yet durable LED Flo-Boxes! Just like the Power LEDs, these will be 70% OFF, but for a limited time you’ll also be getting 50% more LED Flo tubes with a valid purchase of any LED Flo-Box, and DOUBLE the Flo tubes with a valid purchase of an LED Flo-Box Twin Kit!

Check out how David Berry uses two of the 4-bank 4-ft. LED Flo-Boxes to create an even overhead light that wraps nicely around our Helios RGB space lights (cross promo!). The soft output accentuates the geometric beauty of the curved body while also hiding the shadows that would expose the harsher structural features. For close-up product shots like these, Dave loves the Flo-Boxes’ ball-and-socket grip mounts, which grant him the freedom of motion needed to line up the perfect lighting angles.

While these LED Flo-Boxes were designed to look and feel like a fluorescent fixture, they boast several improvements to their applicability as film lights. For one, they’re able to produce much more accurate daylight or tungsten spectra, with CRI and TLCI both over 95, and without any of the annoying fluorescent spikes. They’re also much more efficient than their fluorescent counterparts, drawing only about half the power for the same output. No more messing with bulky electronic ballasts either—the LED Flo-Boxes can be controlled from just a simple switch and dimmer. That effectively manages to bring the total weight down to make it one of the easiest lights to set up and take down. Their lighter weights don’t come at the cost of durability either—specially designed sliding metal brackets hold the flaps at the exact angles that you set them, even after years of folding and unfolding, so you can be sure that you’re getting the perfect light spread every time.

Pre-Order Your Power Beams for 2022!

They’re back! Our Daylight and Tungsten Power Beams are ready for pre-order for 20% off to begin our 2021 End of the Year sale! And with the 8-week lead time, you can start off your 2022 strong with up to 18kW daylight or up to 24kW tungsten. With over 100 units already operating in Europe and over 200 units sold worldwide, there’s no better time than now to see for yourself what all the hype is about.

Filmmakers worldwide asked FilmGear® to bring back beam projectors, so we did that and more. Not only do our Power Beams support higher wattage bulbs for each of the 18”, 24”, and 36” projectors, but they’re also designed with a thicker glass reflector and an overall sturdier build, exemplifying our dedication to durability that lasts. With the additional option of wheeled transport cases, you can safely and easily bring even the massive 36” Power Beams wherever you go.

At full spot, the Power Beams’ columnated shafts of light can be adjusted down to 0° to punch through fog, windows, or even dense forest canopies. Even hundreds of feet away, the beam maintains its pristine shadow definition, yet the edges remain unfocused enough to keep a natural look. Beyond their initial design, the added power of the Power Beams opens up wider flood angles to allow them to be used in similar ways as conventional pars. European filmmakers are already pushing the versatility of these lights in ways that surprise even us!

The dual lamp support just adds to the flexibility of the Power Beam line. While the 18” Tungsten Power Beam only supports 5kW bulbs, it’s still a huge step up from the 2kW bulbs of other 18” tungsten beam projectors. Meanwhile for daylight, the 18” Daylight Power Beam Junior packs 4kW of power into a head that has traditionally used only 1.2kW bulbs. The HMI heads use the same trusty electronic ballasts as FilmGear®’s F-series and Daylight Fresnels, while the Tungsten Power Beams share the electronic dimmers with our Tungsten Fresnels.

Factoring in all of the upgrades to the construction, versatility, and output, you’d think these lights would be reserved for only the biggest budgets, but they’re still cheaper than other beam projectors (most of which you can’t even buy). Add in the 20% pre-order discount from now until the end of the year and you’re getting an unbeatable light at an unbeatable price.

FilmGear® answers the calls of our fellow filmmakers again with the new and improved Power Beams. If you’ve used beam projector on set, but couldn’t find one on the market, now is the perfect opportunity to pre-order one for your next project. Get in touch with us at FilmGear® today to kick off your 2022 with our all-new Power Beams!

Bigger, Brighter, Better: The New Helios 1100C!

Here at FilmGear®, we’ve made it no secret that our bi-color Helios space lights are the reigning winners of NAB’s Product of the Year Award. We were so sure that we could have repeated that success with our first RGB space light, the Helios 700C, last year, but the pandemic cancelled 2020’s show. What it didn’t cancel was two years’ worth of innovation behind the scenes, which is what was unveiled at this year’s Cine Gear LA Expo in the form of the most powerful Helios space light yet: the Helios 1100C. This fixture builds upon the industry-leading CRI and TLCI of the bi-color Helios and adds 1080W of FilmGear®'s efficient RGBW LED chips. Coming Q1 of 2022 with preorders open now, the Helios 1100C is equipped to light even the tallest studios in the brightest colors.

The earlier award-winning models of the Helios series, dubbed the H700 and H1000, were renowned for their high output and color temperature accuracy earning their spot along the ceilings of many major studios. Since then, the engineers at FilmGear® have further optimized the new Helios 700B to get an output nearly double the H1000B. FilmGear® even released the more compact Helios 500B, for smaller studios, while still matching the intensity of the H1000.

Then, FilmGear® went further, adding RGB in the form of the Helios 700C, a light with the functionality to expand the possibilities of the filmmaker's imagination. We also implemented built-in wireless DMX and Bluetooth, along with full support for the traditional DMX/RDM, ethernet, and USB, giving gaffers total control over the light from the ground with their favorite connection of choice. This highly sought-after upgrade was a huge step in eliminating the hassle of gelling hard-to-reach hanging fixtures.

One common issue with RGBW lights compared to bi-color LEDs, however, is sacrificing one white LED for the three colored LEDs. Often, gaffers are forced to prioritize one over the other, and the same is true of the Helios 700B vs 700C (though the Aurora 400C and 200C use RGBW/CW color mixing to get greater output than the 400B and 200B!). With Helios 1100C, you no longer have to choose. This increase in capacity means that you get all the possibilities of the 700C at your disposal, without having to sacrifice the high output of the 700B, effectively giving filmmakers the best of both worlds.

Helios 700C (left) and 1100C (right)

Helios 700C (left) and 1100C (right)

If you’re familiar with FilmGear®’s RGB products, you will feel right at home with the Helios 1100C. The CCT mode allows you to add/subtract green/magenta for easier greenscreen lighting, giving this light more robust bi-color settings than bi-color lights themselves. In RGB, the 1100C literally shines in every category that the 700C does, with more than double the intensity for both the HSI and GEL modes. The Scene mode library includes 11 preset scenes including emergency vehicle flashers, welding sparks, and lightning, with options to import your own.

The Helios 1100C is now available for preorder, and you can try it for yourself by scheduling a demo at our LA location.
